Day 2

Arunachaleswarar Temple

  • Morning Darshan at Arunachaleswarar Temple: Begin your day with a visit to the Arunachaleswarar Temple, one of the largest and most important Shiva temples in India. The temple complex, covering an area of 25 acres, dates back over a thousand years, with contributions from the Chola, Pandya, and Vijayanagara dynasties. The temple is renowned for its massive gopurams (towering gateways), the tallest of which, the Rajagopuram, stands at 217 feet. Participate in the morning rituals and offer your prayers to Lord Shiva, who is worshipped here as Arunachaleswarar.
  • Girivalam (Circumambulation of Arunachala Hill): After the temple visit, embark on the sacred practice of Girivalam, the 14-kilometer circumambulation of Arunachala Hill. This is considered a highly auspicious act, believed to cleanse sins and bestow spiritual merit. The path is dotted with several lingams and small shrines. It’s customary to perform this walk barefoot, and many devotees undertake it during full moon nights when the energy is said to be at its peak.
